Pack around the first 24 hours
Honeymoon packing goes wrong in one specific way: everything is in the hold bag, and the hold bag is in a different country. Pack the first day into hand luggage and the rest matters much less.
| Hand luggage | Why |
|---|---|
| Passports, both, and the marriage certificate if you have booked under a new name | The single most common honeymoon problem is a booking name that does not match a passport — book in your current passport name |
| All travel documents and booking confirmations, printed | Phones die and hotel wifi is not guaranteed at 1am |
| Medication, all of it, in original packaging | Never in the hold |
| One change of clothes and swimwear each | Turns a lost bag from a crisis into an inconvenience |
| Chargers, adapters, power bank | The adapter is the item most often bought twice at airport prices |
| Sun cream in travel sizes | Day one sunburn ruins more honeymoons than lost luggage |
| Cards, some local currency, a backup card kept separately | One card gets blocked abroad more often than you would think |
The admin nobody plans
| Task | When | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Check passport expiry | Six months before | Many countries require six months validity beyond your return date |
| Check visa requirements | Two months before | Including any transit country |
| Travel insurance | At booking, not before departure | It covers cancellation from the day you buy it, which is the point |
| Tell your bank you are travelling | A week before | Or use a card that does not care |
| Vaccinations | Two to three months before | Some need a course, not a single appointment |
| Name change | After the honeymoon | Do not change your passport name before a trip booked in the old one |
| Arrange someone to hold the gifts and cards | The final week | You will not be there to receive anything for two weeks |
If you are leaving straight after the wedding
Pack before the wedding week, not during it. Leave the cases with whoever is driving you, not at the reception venue. And put someone in charge of the gifts, cards and anything left at the venue, because the venue will not hold them for two weeks and you will not be there.
Keep it with the rest of the plan
The checklist pack has this alongside the wedding week list.
Common questions
What should you pack in hand luggage for a honeymoon?
Passports, printed travel documents, all medication, one change of clothes and swimwear each, chargers and an adapter, travel-size sun cream, and cards plus a backup kept separately. Everything else can safely go in the hold.
Should you book a honeymoon in your married name?
No. Book in the name on your current passport. Changing your passport before a trip booked in your old name causes the most common honeymoon problem there is.
When should you buy honeymoon travel insurance?
At the moment you book, not before departure. Cancellation cover starts the day you buy it, which is most of its value.
What gets forgotten when leaving straight after the wedding?
Arranging someone to collect the gifts, cards and anything left at the venue. The venue will not hold them for two weeks and you will not be there.
